DIY Hobie "Mirage Drive" Trolling Motor Kit has features not found in similar products on the market!
Our newly released kit includes an adjustable prop safety collar, this is set by the user on the initial installation and never has to be adjusted again. It is setup as follows: Install the motor in the kayak, rotate the prop until the prop blades are perpendicular to the bottom of the hull. Raise the motor making sure there is at least 1/4 inch clearance between the top of the prop and the bottom of the hull, lock it into position with the depth locking collar on top of the mount. Loosen and slide the prop safety collar up until it contacts the bottom of the mount. Tighten the thumb screw and your done. The prop safety collar prevents damage to the hull and mount if the motor is raised too high during operation. The cassette that we make allows the user to adjust the depth of the motor to their desired preference. The depth of the motor can be adjusted with the depth locking collar that comes with your original motor. Our new design also offers a steering pre-tension/locking screw, this is used to add pretension to the motor shaft if using as a tiller or can be tightened to lock the motor in the straight forward position. There are 3 options when it comes to steering your kayak with our DIY cassette...
1. - Tiller Steering - Use the depth locking collar to set your desired depth, the pre-tension screw in our newly designed cassette is adjustable and enables you to maintain your course hands-free without the need to keep making course adjustments. Just point the motor in the desired direction and let it go!
2. - Rear Rudder Steering - Tighten the pre-tension screw with the motor in the straight forward position and at your desired depth, then use your rear rudder control for steering, its that simple.
3. - Combination Steering - Use the tiller and rear rudder together for even more maneuverability.
Our newly improved
Hobie "Mirage Drive" cassette has features not found in other similar products. We completely redesigned our original Hobie "Mirage Drive" cassette and now it is better than ever!
We made our cassettes completely SOLID
(no more hollow cassettes that allow water intrusion!) and added a motor shaft sleeve which extends all the way through the cassette, providing much more support for the motor shaft and is sealed in the cassette, the sleeve will accommodate trolling motors with a 1-1/8 inch shaft and 1 inch shaft (with included motor shaft reducing bushings). The motor shaft is able to slide up and down and side to side freely in the sleeve without getting water inside the cassette. The sleeve was intentionally off-set in the cassette, this allows the user to rotate the cassette 180 degrees which places the motor closer to the driver during use if needed. We also eliminated the flimsy plastic mounting tabs and replaced them with a one-piece, solid aluminum pin which also extends all the way through the cassette. And finally, we added our new pre-tension/locking screw for the motor shaft which allows the user several options when it comes to maneuverability.
